He didn’t mean to fall asleep before Rose even made it back up to the room on his first night ever on her bed but everything was so comfortable. Pascal had been scrolling through Netflix trying to choose a show to watch, then he was waking up when Rose slid onto her side of the bed.

“Hi.” Rose whispered. The room lights were off now but he could still see her, still get all the sensory signals that she’d showered and dressed into sleepwear and he’d missed all of that. “Sorry—go back to sleep. Carly was talking forever.”

“No no, I wanted to wait for you.” If Pascal’s brain would wake up fully and soon, he’d be able to explain why, but it was slow going. It was everything—the soft light from outside, the nice smell of shampoo but it was everywhere, the blanket now wrapped around him. “What time is it?”

“Past one.”

He could tell that Rose was very carefully setting up her own blanket and he wanted to say she shouldn’t have to worry about disturbing him on her own bed, but the words were not completely there and he also doubted if he was just reading it all wrong. And she was actually talking.

“...I mean how does she think that’s going to end? She should just tell them right away that she’s already made the choice. I would much prefer that my mother have some other life to fixate on if only for a few days. She can’t even give me that? But Carly has always been that person. Gulatan forever. But oh my God you don’t need to hear this now. Go back to sleep.”

“It’s okay, really.” Pascal pushed a leg out from under the blanket in case that helped break the sleepy spell it was having on him. “I didn’t want to spend the first night on your bed just—sleeping ahead of you. It’s weird.”

“Why, Pascal? Was there something you wanted to do?”

“I meant say good night. That’s all.” Pascal laughed. “We can share a bed and not do anything. Like on Love Island.”

“What? What’s Love Island?”

“It’s this reality show—anyway these strangers are on an island and they choose who they want to couple up with and they usually start spending the night on the same bed but it’s a room with many beds and everyone’s there and—” Look if she didn’t know it by now it wouldn’t make any more sense if he explained it. “Anyway I only meant to say, yes, I don’t take sleeping on your bed as an invitation to have sex every time. We can just sleep.”

“Like on Love Island.” It was a clear laugh at the end of that, and not just his sleepy brain imagining it.

“Yes. Good night, Rose.”

“Good night, Pascal.” Then, after the length of a long sigh, “Do they make out before going to sleep on Love Island?”

“Rose, how about let’s forget I mentioned that as an example because it’s not the best one anyway and I can’t believe I even used it—do you want to make out before going to sleep?”

“Yes, yes I do,” she said.
